The idea of a “flagship” loudspeaker almost instantly conjures up images of a device that is much beyond the budgets of most popular music fans and audiophiles. That notion was furthered by my experience at CAF 2023, until I happened onto the Fidelity Imports booth, which was displaying the recently released Acoustic Energy Corinium.

For over thirty years, Acoustic Energy has been a prominent player in the British high-end loudspeaker industry. The brand’s followers have consistently praised the loudspeakers’ speed, detail, and clarity, and it’s undeniable that the firm has successfully carved out a middle-of-the-road position. I’ve already evaluated the reasonably priced AE1 and AE100 MK2 loudspeakers, and I was really delighted.

However, the new Acoustic Energy CORINIUM are priced and targeted at a completely different kind of user.

Acoustic Energy ceased teasing us with pictures of their new flagship loudspeaker after three years of development and eventually made it available for purchase.

The CORINIUM is really less expensive than other “flagship” models from the competition, but high-end electronics and sources are still necessary for these high performance loudspeakers to work as intended. A comprehensive system should cost between $15,000 and $20,000, but if the system just uses one source, you might be able to pay less.

High-quality parts are coupled to the drive units via audiophile-grade internal wiring in the 3-way crossover. This wiring has a proprietary conductor layout to provide the finest possible dynamic expressiveness and melodic detail.

The Corinium gave all of the qualities I adored about the AE1, including speed, detail, and immediacy, but the mid bass and below are a whole other story.

At these exhibitions, one must always take a system’s performance with a grain of salt because hotel rooms have terrible acoustics. However, the bottom end response of these loudspeakers was highly defined, strong, and incredibly rapid.

This system played electronic music with great energy and presence; I was captivated for more than 30 minutes by the sounds of Daft Punk, Tangerine Dream, the Orb, Kraftwerk, and Radiohead. For a cheap motel room, that’s not too awful.

The voices are placed in front of the loudspeakers with rather accurate imaging, and the degree of coloring ultimately depends on the rest of the system. The midrange clarity and resolution were significant selling factors.

The Corinium speakers are quite small and can easily fit in a room the size of my den, which measures 16 feet by 13 feet by 9 feet. Their footprint is comparable to that of the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 loudspeakers that we recently looked at.

The tweeter was something else that caught my attention; I anticipated the Corinium to have a similarly dynamic top end as Acoustic Energy’s loudspeakers.

Lots of detail and an airy presentation, but none of the harshness that I had with the AE1 when I used a desktop DAC/pre-amplifier and passive pre-amplifier coupled to my MacBook Pro laptop to drive it hard.

It’s hard to give the Acoustic Energy Corinium a firm endorsement, but it seems like a really thoughtful and well-designed loudspeaker with superb bottom end response.
